Why is a healthy lifestyle important for Teenagers?

Good nutrition is essential for everyone, but it’s especially important for growing teenagers. As a teenager your body is going through many physical and mental changes and that needs to be supported by a healthy lifestyle and a balanced diet. I have two teenagers at home and I constantly struggle to ensure that their meals are balanced and they follow a certain healthy pattern on a daily basis. It doesn’t mean that they have to give up on their favorite food but along with that they need to ensure they cut down on foods and drinks that are high on sugar and fat. I teach them to replace fizzy drinks to healthy smoothies, homemade fresh juices and lots of WATER. I do not encourage dieting, skipping meals but I try to teach them on having small meals after every 2-3 hours, the key is portion control.  Stay hydrated by drinking at least 8 glasses of water in a day. It becomes challenging and is not as easy as it sounds but then as a mom, that my role to keep feeding their mind with such thoughts.

I believe what they follow now is what they will become when they are adults, so it’s the responsiblity of the parents to teach the kids the importance of a healthy lifestyle because it will help the kids to shape up mentally and physically into better and healthy human beings when they grow up. To stay healthy by both exercising and eating right will help them not only in improving their current health but will also help in shaping their lifelong health.

It may require some effort to change their eating habits, but even a few simple changes will make a huge difference. They’ll feel better and also may find managing weight easier.

Tips to improve Teenagers Diet ~ small changes can make a big difference !

  1. Eliminate JUNK FOOD from your pantry.
  2. Cut down rather avoid drinks that are high on SUGAR.
  3. Drink lots of WATER. Make detox water at home and keep drinking it entire day.
  4. Never skip BREAKFAST, that is the most important meal of the day. Start the day on a healthy note. This doesn’t mean you skip on your lunches or dinners, they are equally important. Go for early dinners.
  5. Reduce SALT intake in your meals.
  6. Snack on NUTS whenever you feel hungry rather than having chips or any other form of junk food.

STRESS ~ Teenager’s Health

I always hear from my Daughter – Mom you don’t understand, I have too many things going on in my head. I don’t know what to do. I was up in the middle of the night and couldn’t get sleep after that, I have worried about my exams etc. And many more such thoughts that run into a teenagers mind which defiantly becomes a challenge to handle for both the parents and the teen.

Stress is pressure or tension exerted on a material object or a state of mental or emotional strain or tension resulting from adverse or demanding circumstances. It is quite challenging to handle teens when they are under stress. The only way I have learnt to handle this situation is by LISTENING to the child. Be all ears to him or her. We as parents are not alone, all go through this stage. Try to understand, acknowledge and calm the situation by explaining them the positive side of things at the same time not running away from the situations or reasons that give them so-called STRESS. BE THEIR for them!

I try to help them by following the THE SECRET BOOK principal of POSITIVE AFFIRMATIONS, it works at times and sometimes this doesn’t work but then I try to explain them the effects of stress on their mental and physical health.

STRESS is a subject that is vast if drilled down further but I just shared few tips that I follow in situations like these with my teens and most of the time they work.
